Most of these are class projects, but I do want to do an individual project of portraits based on a photography book I got a long time ago. These will be in graphite pencil, color pencil, conte , oil pastels, and or charcoal.
Also ( on the suggestion of a friend) to add a page where I just have my "class doodle". Mostly to compare the difference in style, when I have a specific project in mind to when I have no specific context to work with.
1) Making A Toy scary
For this project, we had to pick out a toy or object that looked happy or cute and then make it appear scary or threatening. The instructor, Robert Morrison at UNR, gave us a good amount of creative freedom, and the drawing basically could be rought and look like a sketch. So I picked out a toy that was a character from a Disney movie, Hunchback of Norte Dame who was a harlequin. What I did was used the same pose that the toy was in but decided to portray a more Gothic type of Harlequin. I made the lines extremely rough and played with negative space in terms of the clothing and hat.
2) Drawing with lines
For this class project, we were expected to create a drawing that only portrayed lines, from extremely thick and dark lines to thin and light ones. How I came up with the concept for this drawing was actually based on some of the sketches I made in my class notes (basically doodles). The face I would draw trying to capture the best/ realistic interpretation while the hair would be this odd shape filled with patterns and designs. I'm thinking of redoing this one in color to see how the blending of different colors would change any previous interpretation of the drawing.and the audience
3)Interpretive Drawing
In this assignment, we had to create a compositon of images, based on what the instructer had said we could draw. It was a sphere with two holes and was held up by two cylinders. The sphere had to have a slim cylinder coming out of this that poored a liquid. And that liquid had to fall into a dish which would overflow. And finally, ait had to be on a flat object. This is an unfinished piece, and very interpretive on my part. I think the expectation was that the drawing would look like a contraption, very mechanical. But since he did not specifically say that, I ended up drawing a character. I definitely seem to have a preference for drawing characters, though I would benefit from drawing more landscapes.
This assignment was challenging in that we had to draw a subject using straight lines only. Meaning that you had to use a ruler to draw every line. This is unfinished, and you can see where I ued freehand but I liked what I chose to draw. There was a model skeleton in the room and since nobody ese was using it , I decided to see what would happen if I applied strictly straight lines to what is considered an organic form.
5)Old Photograpth
This assignment was about taking an old photograph and placing a grid on it so the drawing would be more realistic in terms of portion, depth, lighting, and texture Obviously, I drew it a little differently. This was based on a picture when I was a kid. And apparently, I did not get enough sleep because I would take nape, is the oddest places, in the middle of the day. The drawing ended up far more impressionistic than I would have liked, especially with the face, which should have had more shadows and light to illustrate a more three dimensional look. But the pencil marks are interesting to look at and It creates an atmosphere or mood that the audience can feel.
6) Rearrangement
This is one of my favorite drawings, because of the high level of contrast and the detail in the eyes and mouth. For this assignment, we had to take an image from any source, create a grid over it, but then cut it up and rearrange the image to create something different. I found an image in which half of the picture was in black and the other in white. I cut it up into quarters and rearranged it to create and checker-board pattern. I also happened to turn the eyes upside down, to see if there would be a distortion that would be noticeable
7) Conte Portrait
This One is another favorite of mine, and I want to do a series of portraits like this. The image was from a portrait book I gotten a long time ago and still have. The background has been simplified a black backdrop and the clothes have been simplified to a withe coat. The face and hair I rendered to match the photograph to the best of my ability. I'm really proud of the detail in the wrinkles of the clothing and of the subjects face. Again, it's not an exact representation of the photograph, but it does create an mood that is easily picked up by the audience, so i'm proud f that.
